A common mistake that older folks, like us, tend to make is that we start to settle. We start to believe the false notion that after a certain age, life’s opportunities have closed shop. This is of course not true; we are still capable of dreaming big and having ambition. The vastness of our life’s experiences doesn’t mean we can’t still have more. Follow these steps to begin your journey towards greatness.
Remove The Clutter That Holds You Down
By the age that we are in, we tend to hold on to a lot of baggage – physical and mental. Get rid of whatever is holding you down from starting a new chapter in life. Things that you have no use for, old work habits that hold you back and people who sap your energy have to go. It’s time to shake things up and begin with a fresh perspective.
Find The Right Inspiration
Our culture tends to just focus on the achievements of young people, but history is rife with examples of people who have found major success late in life. Winston Churchill, England’s greatest statesman, became prime minister and took on a World War in his 60s. Harlan David Sanders started Kentucky Fried Chicken at the age of 65 with his Social Security check. Ray Kroc ran MacDonald’s and made it what it is today in his 50s. These are just a few of the examples of people who did great things in life without age getting in the way.
Know Your Calling
It’s important to know what you want to invest your energy, time and money in. A calling is usually a dream that time hasn’t been able to extinguish. Life got in the way so far, but now you have the chance to make it happen. It doesn’t have to be something too grand. It’s something that you always wanted to do because you believed in the importance of the work. That’s why some older adults join the Peace Corps and serve missions around the world. You know deep down what your calling in life is. What you need to do is be honest with yourself, peel the layers and discover it.
Learn How You Can Realize Your Dreams
You know yourself and you know where your heart lies. The next step is to prepare for this calling. If your calling is an extension of your professional life so far, you won’t have to start from scratch. For example, a lawyer could start his own legal firm for the underprivileged. However, there are those of us whose hearts lie in uncharted areas. If this is the case for you, leave no stone unturned in learning your craft. Don’t feel that you can’t catch-up at your age. Living life so far has prepared you to learn fast and take on what you are passionate about.
Be Relentless In Your Pursuit
A passionate soul can’t be deterred until it reaches its goals. Don’t give up on your calling. Pursue it with passion and energy – two key elements for success that are already within you. Trust your instincts and crazy ideas. Instead of riding off into the sunset with a whimper, arrive on the scene with a bang. This is your time to shine.
