There are many profound business adages that we’ve all heard through-out our careers. Pearls of wisdom like, “Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life,” “Be careful who you step on while on the way up because you may meet them on the way down,” “There is no substitute for experience” and “Don’t shit where you eat.”
Most of us at Manopause have been around for a while, have other successful careers and come from a variety of professional backgrounds. We have learned a lot of lessons (sometimes the hard way) and thought that we should share the benefit of our collective career experiences with our readers. So we gathered some original and hopefully helpful words of advice from our staff into this soon-to-be-famous list of pithy sayings.
Embrace your character. A successful career is built on character.
Wise men listen more & talk less. It’s amazing what you can learn when you really listen.
You don’t always have to be great at your job to get ahead, because most people suck at their jobs. You just have to better than them.
Being the boss is like having control over the thermostat in the office. You can make everyone sweat or you can keep everything cool.
Empower and incentivize your employees and they will always go the extra mile for you.
When you have the power to fire people, you’re automatically intimidating to them. Whether you realize it or not.
Sometimes, you can learn more working for a bad boss then you can from a good boss, because you can learn what not to do.
Never go to your boss with a problem, without having a solution.
Most people think they could do a better job than their bosses. They’re usually wrong.
Just because somebody is an asshole at work, doesn’t mean they’re necessarily an asshole outside of work.
Think outside of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to say something others think is ridiculous (like the world is round).
Reinvent yourself. New ideas keep you young and motivated.
Stay relevant. As we grow older we tend to relax while the younger generation starts climbing the ladder.

Seek mentorship at any time during your business. It doesn’t matter how old you are, someone is always older and wiser.
Offer mentorship…nobody gets very far in life without help from others.
Financially plan for the future. Don’t miss opportunities for investment and growth.
Always do your research. A thoughtful plan with intentions will lead you to your goals.
Sometimes, looking the part can be more important than playing the part.
Trust, integrity, and authenticity are your greatest assets.
Work with people of character. Everything else can be learned.
Think about walking in your colleague’s shoes before you judge them.
Sometimes you have to be patient and let your co-worker or employee vent their frustrations before you say, “I understand. Can we get back to work now?”
Try to give whatever positive feedback you can before you give harsh criticism.
Be kind and compassionate. It is always appreciated and it pays off in the end.
Be trustworthy and make good on your word.
Be creative every day.
Never say, “Think out of the box.”
Never ask somebody to give 110%.
Never hire a sexy secretary.
