Do you know guys that fish and wonder why they’re so passionate about it? It seems to non-fishermen that it’s pretty sedate, or better yet, boring. And yet, more and more people, especially as they get older, are signing up and casting their lines. Why?!

Keeps You Fit

It may be hard to imagine how fishing can keep you fit when all you do is sit around in a boat all day. Well, that’s not entirely the case. Fishing is super beneficial for your health. It is a good workout for your main muscles, lungs, and heart. Briskly walking to a fishing spot that is a 5 – 10 minutes’ walk from your car is an added bonus.

It is a perfect sport for the generally less active because it engages shoulders, arms, legs and back in a workout when you struggle with your catch. Even casting off and reeling in also strengths your arms. You may not realize it, but your body gets a complete workout on a fishing trip.

Boosts Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that your body requires to function properly. Your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium, which consequently, promotes overall bone health. It has been observed that people over 50 are prone to developing Vitamin D deficiency due to factors like decreased food intake, weakened nutrient absorption during digestion and reduced skin thickness.

You don’t need to worry about vitamin D deficiencies if you regularly enjoy fishing because researchers have suggested that spending 60 minutes in sunlight every week is enough to produce a sufficient amount of Vitamin D from sunlight. Simply keep fishing for healthier teeth and bones!

Form of Meditation

Fishing is a form of meditation and helps you de-stress and find peace of mind. Moreover, researchers have found that spending time near water has therapeutic effects on people and some even suggest it as a therapy for PTSD. After a day of fishing, you will not only feel refreshed but also satisfied and fulfilled.

Makes You a Better Person

There is no doubt that fishing puts your patience to practice. It teaches you self-control and simply brings out the better person in you. On top of that, some days are just bad fishing days and can be really disappointing. You may spend the whole day with your fishing pole and still end up catching nothing except an old shoe. So, in a way, fishing also teaches you how to gracefully handle disappointments.

A Delicious Treat

While it’s not for everybody, fish is delicious. Whether raw as sushi or cooked to perfection by a chef, it’s good eating. I find it’s best to cook it outside, either while camping on your fishing trip or in the backyard barbecue to avoid having your house smell like a cannery.

Fish is full of important nutrients. It is especially beneficial for people over 50 because it’s known to reduce the risk of Alzheimer and Dementia. Eating fish a few times a week will also improve your cardiovascular health and will assist in decreasing your blood pressure. It keeps your arteries free of fatty plaques and keeps your heart pumping strong. That can help with erectile function! It is also helpful in dealing with vision loss that usually comes with old age, which isn’t related to erectile function, although mom did say…never mind.

Eating fish has many advantages but most importantly it is known to reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men. In short, fish is a perfect food for men above 50. So, are you hooked yet?
