Skilled Position (sleeper) Waiver Wire Picks

(Disclaimer: I don’t really hate anyone….just dislike them on my fantasy team)

OK some of you may have already had your fantasy draft and others of you will be drafting just before the season begins. At this point in the pre-season, I have a few love ’em and hate ’em picks that could help you win your leagues this year. Also, some of the sleepers should still be available on the wire in some 10 and 12 team leagues.

Gems You Might Find On The Waiver Wire

Tight Ends

Love ‘Em:

Irv Smith moves from the Minnesota Vikings: a love ’em pick! With Kyle Randolph gone, Smith will undoubtedly see more targets in an offense that relies heavily on tight ends.

Gerald Everett of the Seattle Seahawks is one of my big love them picks this year. Everett‘s going to benefit from his new surroundings and get a lot more targets than he did last year playing behind Tyler Higbee in LA. The increased workload at tight end, Will Dissly moving on and having Quarterback Russell Wilson throwing him the ball should lead to a big year for Everett.

Tyler Higbee who is now TE1 for the Los Angeles Rams, is another love ’em pick. Higbee was top-five in targets last year with Everett on the team. Now with Everett gone to Seattle he should have an even bigger year as far as fantasy production goes.

Hate ‘Em:

Mike Gesicki from the Miami dolphins is a hate ’em pick for me. Gesicki had a really big year last year with Tua Tagovailoa at a time when the dolphins had no other weapons at receiver due to injury. The Dolphins went out and got veteran wide receiver Will fuller and drafted wide receiver Jason Waddle in the first round this year. Those two guys are going to eat up a lot of targets, so the reduced target share will definitely take away production from Gesicki.

Robert Tonyan from the Green Bay Packers is another hate ’em pick. Tonyan had a break out year when it comes to fantasy points, but what most people don’t realize is that most of Tonyan’s catches were for touchdowns (sounds good on paper) but when it comes to targets, completions and yardage his stats last year were underwhelming. Chances of him having as many touchdowns as he had last year are pretty slim, and now Aaron Rodgers has another target to throw to now that old pal Randall Cobb returns and we see the emergence of Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Running Backs

Chris Carson from the Seattle Seahawks. Carson was sneaky good last year and ranked in the top 10 of all running backs in the league.

Darrell Henderson of the LA Rams is a love ’em pick who will now enjoy the RB1 status with the Rams with Sony Michel coming over from the New England Patriots to back him up.

Myles Gaskins from the Miami dolphins. Has the starting role for now and should get a lot of carries with a second year quarterback in the backfield.

James Connor from the Arizona Cardinals. He will also get starter carries and have a chance to get back to his Pittsburg Steelers form replacing Kenyan Drake.

AJ Dillon, RB2 for the Green Bay Packers will back-up Aaron Jones and replace Jamal Williams who left to the Lions (Williams also stands to gain bigger points splitting out as a receiver for the Lions.)

Trey Sermon, RB2 from The San Francisco 49ers. Sermon is in a run heavy offense and possibly starting a rookie quarterback should see him getting plenty of carries.

James Robinson, RB1 from the Jacksonville jaguars. Robinson had a very strong year last year and will see a lot of action with a rookie quarterback in the backfield.

Wide Receivers

Love ‘Em:

Tee Higgins with the Cincinnati Bengals. Higgins has his rookie first round pick and fellow Clemson alum, Ja’Marr Chase (also a sleeper pick).

Joe Burrows, quarterback and first overall draft pick last year, is back and he’s destined for a big year.

Darnell Mooney from the Chicago Bears. Mooney is definitely under the radar. Mooney had 61 receptions as a rookie. Oh by the way, that 61 receptions by a rookie last year was a Chicago Bears record.

And my favorite sleeper wide out… Antonio Brown of the Super Bowl Champ Bucs. Brown has a full camp, no off-field distractions (at least not yet) and another Super Bowl ring for his Hall of Fame career. He’s got plenty of gas in the tank.

Hate ‘Em:

Tyler Boyd from the Cincinnati Bengals. He will have two other hotshot young receivers vying for targets and he’ll have to play an RB3 role. (See above)

Julio Jones of the Tennessee Titans. All I can say about this is, I just don’t like Ryan Tannehill. I had Tannehill down in Miami and I always thought he was an average quarterback and a game manager… That team literally runs on Derrick Henry.

Mike Williams from the Tampa Bay buccaneers. With Tom Brady having Antonio Brown, Chris Godwin and Scotty Miller, it looks like it might be an airshow in Tampa this year. I think Williams is going to see a big drop-off in touches.
